Two Graduate Students from the Consortium of Six National Universities in Japan Participate in the 2016 LERU Summer School

From July 10 to 15, 2016, a doctoral summer school program organized by the League of European Research Universities (LERU) was held in the City of Leiden, the Netherlands, in which two students enrolled in the doctoral program of Nagasaki University, a member university of the Consortium of Six National Universities in Japan (Chiba University, Kanazawa University, Kumamoto University, Nagasaki University, Niigata University and Okayama University), participated. Their participation in this annual event was realized by the courtesy of the Leiden University Medical Center, which was the lead manager of this year’s event. The two participants were Chantal Ama Agbemabiese and Dr. Keita Iyama, who are a third-year student and a fourth-year student, respectively, of the Nagasaki University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. They, together with other participants, worked on the issues presented under the event’s theme “Data Stewardship for Scientific Discovery and Innovation” from various angles.

The underlying idea behind this theme is the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data principles, and by extension open science. With an increasing amount of data being accumulated in scientific research, the FAIR principles, which enable researchers to share the data they have accumulated to pursue their research in a more efficient way, have recently become inevitable for those involved in research data management. In the summer school, lectures were delivered on how to promote these data stewardship practices and what benefits will be brought out by these practices, which were followed by lively discussions among participants.

For the two participants from Nagasaki University, it is hoped that the knowledge obtained through the lectures and discussions in the LERU summer school will be a valuable experience in their future research career.
